This is an illustration i've made for a friend of mine that is finishing the comercial airpilot course. He was quite specific about what he wanted in the frame starting from the model of the plane (pitts), the formation that the 4 planes should have, to the type of sky, angle of camera and day time. For the sky i've matte painted it based on a photograph using Photoshop. The lighting, modeling, and rendering was all done in Softimage XSI. The textures wer're done in Photoshop based on real paints of real models of pitts and applied in XSI. The post-work was all done in Photoshop. Let me know what you think about it.
